In recent months, the Punjab Police have intensified their crackdown on organized crime, leading to the arrest of several gangsters and their family members. This assertive approach has, however, resulted in increased threats from local gangsters, challenging the state's law enforcement agencies.
A significant development occurred in June 2024 when the Jalandhar Commissionerate Police arrested family members of Canada-based gangster Lakhbir Singh Landa and his associate Yadwinder Singh. Those arrested included Ranjodh Singh (brother-in-law), Jaspal Kaur (sister), and Parminder Kaur (mother) of Lakhbir Singh, as well as Jaikaar Singh (father), Baljeet Kaur (mother), and Husanpreet Kaur (sister) of Yadwinder Singh. In response to these arrests, there has been a noticeable escalation in threats from gangsters aiming to intimidate law enforcement personnel and deter further actions against their networks. Punjab's Director General of Police (DGP) has acknowledged these challenges, stating, "The Punjab Police remain steadfast in their commitment to upholding law and order. We will not be swayed by threats from criminal elements and will continue our operations to dismantle organized crime in the state."
The DGP's statement underscores the Punjab Police's resolve to maintain public safety despite the risks involved. The recent arrests of gang members and their associates highlight the department's proactive measures to curb criminal activities. However, the increasing threats from these gangs indicate the persistent challenges faced by law enforcement in Punjab.
